The Senior Director for Strategy and Advocacy will play a pivotal role in our team’s collective efforts to advance student-focused education policy in the state of Tennessee.
We are seeking an individual who loves engaging in advocacy, policy, and has a passion for public education.
This role will actively engage TSS’s critical external partners and stakeholders, build and execute our advocacy strategies, and lead staff to coordinate the alignment of projects across all of the organization’s programmatic work.
This is a new role in our organization created to support a growing portfolio of strategic outreach and issue advocacy.
The successful candidate will work with the president & CEO to shape the role over time.
The mission of the Senior Director for Strategy and Advocacy is to lead the organization’s issue advocacy programs, deepening our impact on the political process to ensure support of student-focused reforms are advanced and protected on a long-term basis.
The Senior Director for Strategy and Advocacy will be a key member of the leadership team, working in partnership with the president & CEO, communications, and our field and government relations team to identify data-informed strategies for supporting organizational initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES Advocacy: Develop and execute state and local issue advocacy campaigns to protect and advance Tennessee’s student-centered education policies.
Monitor and cultivate opportunities for the organization to engage in issue advocacy campaigns at all levels throughout the state.
Develop and execute strategies to support more champions for education reform policies.
Track and advise on political developments in real-time, assist the Communications Director in the production of internal and external communication, talking points, op-eds, and press releases to shape and react to the news of the day.
Develop and manage relationships with political and community stakeholders and external allies throughout the state.
Design and implement training, leadership development, and advocacy programs to connect parents, teachers, and other partners with opportunities to advocate, speak, and write in support policies and candidates that support our work.
Work within the advocacy team to develop and implement an aggressive field plan for advocate activities including, but not limited to Recruitment Drives, Community Meetings, Advocacy Training, and Capitol Visits to build a long-term culture of advocacy Works with Government Relations Director to educate advocates on education policy initiatives and updates members on legislative activity Coalition-building: Cultivate relationships, champions, and strategic partnerships that expand the TSS ability to educate and influence the education sector.
Manage the organization’s grassroots engagement to recruit and engage Tennesseans who support policies that improve public education Support the development of a network of community partners and advocates, business leaders, school board members, and district staff to drive important improvements to public schools Management: Develop and manage the workflows of staff and consultants; plan and invest in the professional development of staff.
Manage the organization’s workflow and project systems Work with President & CEO to design internal and external meetings and agenda Help to build a team culture that is high performing, collaborative and continuously learning Establish thoughtful systems and structure to provide support to partners in the field Strategy: Assist execution of TSS vision and strategy.
Develop and maintain relationships with strategic partners, identifying their strategic needs and priorities, and develop programs and services that support coalition goals.
Assist the President & CEO in the execution of a long-term strategic plan Serve as a strategic thought partner to the President & CEO and the rest of the staff working collaboratively to design and execute strategic initiatives across the organization With the President & CEO, support an organizational culture that embodies the organization’s values of innovation, integrity, and excellence PROFICIENCIES Quality Communication: Must possess excellent written and oral communication.
This includes the ability to present highly technical information to nontechnical audiences and to assist in developing sophisticated engagement strategies by utilizing multiple media with diverse audiences.
Must have the ability to quickly summarize a large amount of information, both in writing and orally, on a regular basis.
Political Sophistication: Must have an awareness and appreciation for the ways grassroots and issue advocacy outreach have evolved in recent years and understand how to develop comprehensive issue advocacy campaigns in a variety of markets.
Collaboration: We magnify our organization’s success when we work collaboratively as a team and with external partners.
In line with our commitment to improving student achievement in Tennessee, our Senior Director for Strategy and Advocacy will strive to inform and support outreach strategies for partners in the civic, business, religious, and philanthropic sectors.
They will assist in developing internal and external metrics and dashboards to track progress on key metrics while using data files to identify new opportunities to improve student outcomes.
Affinity for Technology: The Senior Director for Strategy and Advocacy must be technologically savvy and not intimidated by the prospect of learning new technology.
Proficiency in the following platforms is ideal: Google Analytics, Slack, Microsoft Excel, NationBuilder, Aristotle, and i360.
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level of experience Campaign experience as staff, intern, or volunteer Volunteer management experience Knowledge of the political campaign and legislative process Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to listen well and communicate effectively Strong networker Ability to effectively manage time, multi-task, meet deadlines, and achieve goals in a fast-paced environment Demonstrated passion for Tennesseans for Student Success’s mission Self-motivated, results-driven, and professional Knowledge of state-based politics and political climate Experienced in project management Proven attention to detail and organizational skills
