Ameritas is looking for an Director, Underwriting provide underwriting expertise and leadership to the Individual Life Underwriting Division for Ameritas. This position is responsible for assisting the Chief Underwriter in the management of life insurance risk for the department. The role will aid in establishing policies, procedures and underwriting guidelines. In addition, the position will require knowledge and a working familiarity with contestable claims, compliance and reinsurance treaties. Essential Functions: * Assist in managing the overall mortality of the department. * Evaluate and make decisions or recommendations on life insurance applications, with emphasis on larger and/or more complex cases. * Review contestable claims and make appropriate recommendations. * Assist in establishing and maintaining medical requirements and underwriting guidelines. * Evaluate individual applications to determine if facultative reinsurance outlets should be used for impaired risks. * Consult with Field VP’s, agency managers and producers using tact and sensitivity where differing opinions exist. * Assist and lead in negotiating with reinsurance partners on underwriting decisions, guidelines, procedures, practices and treaties. * Oversee the redesign of our audit process and identification of key quality/service measurements. * Assist in establishing policies and maintaining policies and procedures to prevent violations of Company principles relating to Market Conduct issues of Active and Fair Competition, replacement of business, illustrations and making disparaging remarks. * Meet with Corporate Compliance Officer as needed and report any alleged anomalies or deviations by Company producers relative to the Market Conduct Guide including any questionable ethical behaviors or practices. * Review and investigate complaints or violations by staff or field associates and take appropriate corrective action. * Prepare and conduct underwriting presentations internally and externally including agency visits, industry meetings, training seminars, etc. * Participate actively at industry functions including study groups, meetings and seminars. * Assist in the recommendation, testing, training and development of automated underwriting engines and work-flow systems and applications. * Participate in the selection, training and coaching of members of the underwriting team. Provide leadership, education and engagement to team members. Required Knowledge and Skills: Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience. FLMI, FALU, or CLU courses completed for designation or being actively pursued toward completion. Experience: 10+ years of full authority underwriting experience in positions of increasing responsibility. Special Skills or Knowledge: * Thorough, detailed knowledge of the Company’s underwriting policies, procedures, and philosophies, as well as a broad knowledge of the individual products, policy provisions, and underwriting manuals. * A comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to analyze and evaluate financial statements and make appropriate decisions. * Highly developed communication and persuasion skills. * Strong decision making skills.
