Division of Animal Care Internship/Summer Work Program
The Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Division of Animal Care (DAC) Internship/Summer Work Program is designed to be an introduction to Laboratory Animal Husbandry for current undergraduate students pursuing studies in animal science, agriculture, zoology, biology, or other related fields. In addition to providing care for common laboratory animal models, interns will also learn about comparative pathology, veterinary medicine in a research setting, and the regulatory requirements related to the care of laboratory animals.
The program runs from mid-May to late August approximately 12 – 14 weeks depending on the intern’s schedule. A maximum of two interns are accepted each year. Applications are due by April 1 and candidates are selected by May 1.
The Intern position is a VUMC temporary staff position. Interns are required to comply with policies and guidelines set forth for all VUMC employees.
Qualifications to apply:
- Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in Animal Science or Animal Care.
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program; preference will be given to those who have completed their first year.
- A letter of intent.

Education
High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent experience) and < 1 year relevant experience

- Sedentary category requiring exertion up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and uses negligible amounts of force to move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
