The Content Specialist is a three-year term professional position that is part of the University Relations team within the Division of Communications at Vanderbilt University.
The position is a key individual contributor responsible for developing and implementing content in support of the university’s mission and leading priorities, including the Vanderbilt Project on Unity and American Democracy, (“the project”) a new and high-visibility institutional initiative that aims to advance research and evidence-based reasoning into the national discourse on unity.
Leveraging storytelling, writing and editing expertise, this position identifies compelling stories, conducts interviews, plans coverage approaches for a variety of distribution channels and writes and coordinates stories.
In addition, the Content Specialist writes, edits and publishes communications, talking points and other content for the project co-chairs and executive director.
The ideal candidate has direct communications experience with political campaigns, federal policy-focused initiatives or foundations, Capitol Hill (U.S.
Congress) or within a federal or state administration.
Reporting directly to the Editorial Strategy Director, the Content Specialist works closely within the University Relations team, across the Division of Communications and with others across campus to achieve these goals.The University Relations team within the Division of Communications is responsible for developing and executing strategic content and developing digital platforms that advance the university’s priorities and promote engagement among all core audiences.
The Content Specialist will work within the Editorial Strategy function, while also partnering closely with the Strategic Communications team.Duties and Responsibilities* Seek out compelling narratives to support the Vanderbilt Project on Unity & American Democracy for messaging, digital storytelling and email newsletters.* Consider all media formats and use all channels, including web, social media, email and traditional environments, to communicate, to include posting online content and executing digital distribution strategies to support position goals.* Partner closely with the Communications Strategy team to identify story needs and possible distribution channels for content.* Plan and maintain editorial calendars for assigned coverage areas.* Manage execution of all communications tactics to ensure that efforts are coordinated and messaging is consistent across channels.* Write content as needed to support the goals of the project team, to include event briefings and Q&A content, web content, talking points, speeches, co-chair messaging and other projects as assigned.
Demonstrate fluency with AP style and university style guidelines in this work.* Coordinate closely with the Marketing Solutions Creative Strategy and Digital Strategies teams to identify appropriate design approach and assets to support projects as assigned.* Assist the Video and Photography team with story development and production, and guide messaging.* Be able to rigorously fact-check your own work and that of others.* Provide support as needed and assigned for department priorities.* Demonstrate understanding of the university’s mission, values, goals and priorities and an ability to ensure that all are considered in developing communications strategies.* Communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences-including faculty, students, leadership, staff, alumni, suppliers and agencies.* Efficiently and effectively manage multiple, complex results-oriented projects with quick turn-around requirements.* Adhere to confidentiality and business ethics; demonstrate outstanding judgment and discretion.* Perform other relevant duties as assigned.* Other duties as assignedQualifications* A bachelor’s degree is necessary.* A degree in communications or higher education is preferred.* At least 5 years of experience in communications, public affairs, journalism or related field is necessary.* Experience working for or with an institution of higher education is preferred.* Editorial skills, including continuing education or certification, are preferred.* Experience working on a political campaign, federal policy-driven initiative or foundation, Capitol Hill (U.S.
