JOB SUMMARY:
As a Trauma Registrar you will be responsible for the collection/abstraction of required state and national trauma data bank elements into the Trauma Registry database on all patients meeting state or national trauma inclusion criteria. You will abstract data from the medical record according to the requirements of the hospital, state and national trauma registry data definitions including demographic characteristics, prehospital information, initial hospital treatment, operating room usage, outcome and final disposition. Along with that you will code injuries and procedures using current ICD-10 and AIS codes.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
Vanderbilt University Medical Center provides trauma care for 80,000 square miles. The Division of Acute Care Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center handles close to 8,000 acute traumas admitting over 5,000 of those annually. Essential for the quality of trauma care provided by Vanderbilt University Medical Center are its facilities. These include a 20-bed burn unit, a 31 bed integrated Acute and Sub Acute care unit, which contains a 18 bed ICU, a 7 bed Acute Admission Area and a 10 bed Sub-Acute unit, and Lifeflight, an active air medical transport program.
The Trauma Program has been a level 1 state verified trauma center since the 1980s and an American College of Surgeons verified level 1 trauma center since 2014.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collection/abstraction of 300+ data points and entry into the NTRACS Trauma Registry database on all trauma patients admitted to VUMC and MCJCH as a Level I Trauma Center. Data Management- data integrity, reports and data presentation Anatomy and Conditions of Injury Coding and Scoring Concepts Registry- NTDB, State(s), and internal registry
- Communicates with department staff including physicians, managers, nursing staff, process improvements and research coordinators. Participates in validation of 5-10% of Registry data entry, tracks inconsistencies, and educates co-workers as needed.
- Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments by participating in:a. Taking monthly TQIP quizzes and reportsb. TQIP Open Forum webinars.c. Participates in registry specific coursework and continuing education courses per year, and meetings and activities.
- Data Entry and Reporting a. Abstracts data and performs data entry by determining appropriateness of patient entry, within timelines of quality measures (=/>95) and discharge requirements. b. Codes diagnoses and hospital procedures ICD10 and enters into Trauma Registryc. Submits trauma data to registry and databank and various Level 1 Trauma centers.
High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent experience) and 1 year relevant experience
ICD-10 knowledge is needed for this role.
